Warden's Address, Annual Meeing
February 1, 2009

Chinese Version

It truly has been a blessing and a privilege to serve for the past four years as the Warden of the Episcopal Church of Our Savior -- an excellent growing experience for me, particularly during a time when our parish was in transition -- from Father Charles Chan's departure, to an interim period without a priest, and then Mother Ajung's joining the ministry at Our Savior.  Through it all, our church continues to strive be a beacon to the community through our various forms of ministries and services, witnessing for Christ in this world.  At the same time we experience first-hand God’s watching over us and providing for us every step of the way.  We indeed have been blessed!

As I retire from being the Warden, I am leaving the Vestry in the good hands of Mother Ajung, the new Wardens and the Vestry members.  I trust that you will continue to support and uplift each other.  The parish's leadership will need your constant prayers as they seek God's guidance and wisdom concerning the future direction of the church.

Our Savior's future growth is a concern shared by many, and I hope you understand the urgency of this matter.  This is a growth both in the spiritual and demographic sense.  How do we attract newcomers to worship in our midst and become part of this family?  How welcoming and accepting are we toward strangers walking through our door?  Do we reach out to those around us and invite them to share this worship and spiritual experience at 48 Henry Street?  Our Savior is not a social club with exclusive membership: those who don't fit our description need not apply!  It is fitting that the Episcopal Church's signs reads "The Episcopal Church welcomes you."

Considering the economic down-turn the country and world are facing, Our Savior will probably deal with some tough financial constraint in this coming year.  It is all the more reason that your support and prayers are needed.  I urge all of you to work and walk with Mother Ajung in our pilgrimage and in our quest for growth.

I complete my terms as the Warden with a grateful heart.

Sincerely yours,

Samuel Cheung
